Located in a late 19th Century ferry terminal, this high-end gourmet food hall at the foot of Market Street and the San Francisco Bay Bridge is a culinary pilgrimage for take-out dining and weekend browsing. The best way to begin is near Slanted Door Restaurant, the former-James Beard darling with its tough reservation policy but delightful to-go café Out The Door. Continue walking down the hall to Hog Island Oysters with its seven varieties of slurpy-shelled delight and onto Acme Bread Company and Miette Patisserie for an unrivaled selection of French macarons. Local chefs make regular pilgrimages to Cowgirl Creamery for its local cheeses and then onto Far-West Fungi for brown bag-fulls of exotic mushrooms. But perhaps our favorite stop is Boulette’s Larder, owned and operated by a local couple, who create an apothecary-style counter restaurant with foodie delights for casual lunches and take-home dinners.

Tips

If you can, make your way by foot as it’s a struggle to find parking and you may need the exercise afterwards. Try to make it for the local farmer’s market Tuesdays 10am-2pm, Thursdays 4pm-8pm (spring-fall), Saturdays 8am-2pm and Sundays 10am-2am (spring-fall).

Last Word

Locals and thoroughly impressed tourists walk the block-long hall with warehouse style storefronts eateries and open-air passage ways leading to a large terrace overlooking the San Francisco Bay.
