On the southeastern edge of downtown LA that was once a flashpoint for the city's burgeoning film industry, a landmark building and historic theater becomes the LA outpost of Ace Hotels. The area's gentrification is still debatable, albeit fashionable stores and juicers now exist next to independent grocers and barricaded office blocks that appear vacant even if they're not. Ace Hotel arrives via a cheery valet in a part of LA that has few, the hotel's entrance one of three that lead to the in-house brasserie known as LA Chapter and arts theater that's home to live events and dance repertory by Benjamin Millepied. The reception couldn't be scripted any better with old-fashioned counter attended by modish staff and wrap-around boutique of curated wares. A mezzanine space is home to one of two in-house lounges, the other accessed via elevator to the rooftop bar that's chic without losing that urban connection to downtown. Outside, a large rooftop offers a well-decorated outdoor lounge on one side and small pool surrounded in very forgettable loungers on the other - but with downtown skyline that's why you're here in the first place.

The Room

Having watched the Ace Hotels brand evolve from eclectic boutique hotel to formidable design chain, we were quite impress by the variety of room categories offered that include affordable Small rooms to impressive terrace suites that incorporate many of building's historic design details. Entry-level rooms are arranged with minimal décor among period windows and open-plan bathrooms. Those that can afford it should opt for more impressive Loft rooms with kitchenettes and bars outfitted with premium alcohol and gourmet edibles. Top-of-the-line Terrace Suites feature outdoor spaces with urban views and occasional skyline stunner.
