The Parties, the People - and the Art that rule Miami's Basel

Are you going to Basel this year? We've already been asked a hundred times, and the question is usually followed-up with questions on where to stay, which galleries are showing what, and the best party to score an invite to this year. Art Basel Miami Beach arrives December 6-9 with a bang, with much-anticipated Art Basel Miami Beach and its innumerable satellite fairs that have popped up in recent years. Favored exhibitions include the Hass Brother's first museum exhibition at the Bass Museum, Audemars Piguet-sponsored Tomas Saraceno installation along the oceanfront between 21st and 22nd Street, the inaugural Faena Festival and Gagosian with Jeffrey Deitch at the Moore Building featuring an impressive exhibition of 1960s art from pop to minimalism. Where to stay this year is much as it has been, a room at the Setai or Soho House is always best - or perhaps the Faena if you're able to endure that much red decor with so little sleep.

The Miami food scene is on fire - in the last year chefs like Thomas Keller have set-up permanent flagships like The Surf Club Restaurant. Having been thoroughly disappointed in the culinary debut of Le Sirenuse, Thomas Keller reclaims lost glory with a stunning dining room with odes to Miami Beach like flamingo pink chairs and tableside-prepared salads that are an ode to fine American dining. Boulud Sud is the most overlooked gourmand to open this year, with a sensational Southern Med menu in the rather forgettable JW Marriott Marquis. Generator Hotels is the latest in budget-minded boutique hotels to hit the city and its all-day restaurant, The Jim & Neesie is a boho foodie refuge helmed by chef Daniel Roy. Explore new hoods like Upper Buena Vista where the owners of Fratelli Milano set-up Vista - a new dining room and rooftop terrace that surrounds a 15-year-old banyan tree.

For those that only go to Miami Basel for the parties, there's certainly no shortage of them this year with parties like Favela Beach Basel Edition kicking off December 4th hosted by Mr. Brainwash. Wednesday brings Felix Da Housecat to Do Not Sit On the Furniture and Ibiza's favorite Guy Gerber at Wall Lounge. G-Eazy headlines Thursday at E11even and Zedd plays through the night at LIV. Friday brings the incredible Rumors with Guy Gerber at Delano Beach Club while Zhu finds a pop-up at RC Cola Plant (pictured) on Saturday night. Now time to make some calls and get on those guest lists, as anyone showing up to Basel without their invites lined-up might as well stay home.
