Resort

Once the private hideaway of J. Paul Getty, who never lived to see the completion, Fairmont Pierre Marques recently underwent a $30-million makeover to debut a fresh new resort facility worthy of Acapulco's renewed jetset status. The resort sprawls around the original villa, enveloping Mexican-style bungalows and low-rise buildings set amidst tropical gardens on Acapulco's glitzy Revolcadero Beach. A total of three resort pools feature lagoon-style edges and dramatic proportions worthy of its Getty ancestry. Six separate eateries include vary between the very casual pool café to elaborate Tabachin, the hotel's fine dining restaurant serving contemporary Mexican cuisine popular with nearby villa-owning locals. While the setting and location are legendary, think Slim Aarons in a chain hotel, the overall resort still caters more to older travelers and families than the California socialites and celebrities that once called this their Mexican home.

The Room

Designed around a community of white villas, bungalows and low-rise pavilions gathered in a tropical garden setting, a total of 229 guest accommodations include an exaggerated division between entry-level and upgraded bungalows or suites. Standard garden-view rooms can be a bit drab, lined in industrial carpeting or Mexican pavers with eclectic floral-motif fabrics for bedding and recently updated furniture selection. Textiles like upholstery and cushion feel a bit office waiting room, firm to sit on and not much better to look at. Upgraded bungalows and villas offer a collection of ‘60s and ‘70s style accommodations with private terraces under low-flung rooflines. Décor is better, upgraded with cushy club chairs and spa-style bathroom you expect of one of Acapulco’s best hotels. Large picture windows open to lush tropical gardens, pools accessed along secluded walkways protected by a small army of in-house security guards.
