Hotel Type

Mini-resort

It's one of the world's most spectacular sights, approaching Positano on roads clinging to perilous cliffs with jaw-dropping edges and tight turns that are inevitably taken opposite a mega-tourist bus. The hotel sits at the upper end of Positano, an 18th-century villa that has remained in the Sersale family for three generations. The Sirenuse makes itself known on a romantic cobblestone street with an unassuming entrance that makes no mention of being one of the most exclusive hotels around. Guests arrive to a light-filled lobby with wooden check-in desk with cubbyholes containing clunky key-chains and daily mail of residing guests. It's a hotel where people like to stay the entire summer, much like John Steinbeck did when he fell in love with the hotel on assignment for Harper's Bazaar. Much larger today, the hotel is a must-see destination for traveling glitterati seeking-out the cliffside hotel offering quintessential Italian style from the terrace pool to the basement spa and fitness area.

The Room

Unlike the usual luxury hotel, each room is decorated in individual style with local antiques and southern Italian style. Whitewashed walls with stone floors and bold-colored fabrics are the common theme of guest rooms, varying in size but all offering panoramas of Positano. Looking through the window the angle is almost overwhelming; one immediately understands the building-obstacles encountered throughout history while absorbing the dizzying views of the Mediterranean. On each bed is a small zip-purse of skin lotions and tanning oils for protection - there’s even a lip balm free of charge. Bathrooms are stocked with hotel-brand toiletries available in the Emporio Sirenuse (hotel boutique, across the street) and worthy of packing or buying - try the signature Eau d’ Italia splash cologne.
