Design Hotel

A new brand by hotelier Ian Schrager, ubiquitous of NY's Royalton and Gramercy Park Hotel, comes to life along Chicago's Gold Coast in its first-installment to date. Located within a marvelously refurbished and renamed Ambassador East Hotel, the property has been infused with a sophisticated and modern design aesthetic accessed through an ornate iron and ebonized-wood doorway leading to a grand reception under 28-ft. ceiling trimmed in white coffer ceiling. Through architectural archways, the Living Room comes into view with its communal tables and stylish seating areas in a backdrop of even more wood paneling with antiqued mirrors, communal tables and fireplaces trimmed in slab-stone.

Public Chicago benefits from a man who's single-handed defined the last 25-years in hotel trends, resulting in transformative spaces like a Library and Coffee Bar that offers a working business area by day and lively lounge and cocktail scene by night. Additional perks like an in-house screening room lends well to the hotel's VIP and celebrity clientele. But above all, the iconic Pump Room has been preserved and remade into a modern-day with all-day menu and late-night supper by Jean-Georges Vongerichten who creates his most lively and youthful hotel eatery to date at Chicago's latest it-hotel.

The Room

Schrager puts a lux-spin on the cheap-chic hotel movement defined in recent years by brands like Ace and Standard Hotels. In its Chicago debut, Public maximizes the small hotel spaces and large views of the former-Ambassador East. Superior Queen rooms offer custom-built furnishings like intricate wall-mounted consoles and side tables that allude to styles like Armani Casa and B&B Italia. Deluxe Room and higher room categories benefit from more living space arranged in crisp metal desks and cocktail tables and upholstered pieces in natural linen fabric with nail head detail. Walls feature black and white photographs as well as Schrager’s affection for avant-garde drapes with generous hem. Bathrooms are more simple spaces, with soothing all-white tile design with custom vanities and shower-tub combination in most room.
