The Scene:
Its bronzed '80s high-rise architecture does little to advertise the sedate and stylish world found within Mandalay Bay's THEHotel. The entrance is almost impossible to find, located behind the Mandalay Bay Resort through a labyrinth of underground parking garages ultimately leading to a hospital-like valet area. But just past the glass sliding doors, a deco-minded design masterpiece unfolds with rich mahogany woodwork, marble floors and gallery-minded artwork from Richard Serra. Leggy tourists and stylish visitors intersect the lobby area, which defies the image of all-you-can-eat Vegas tourists. Free of cut-off denim shorts and halter-tops, a '20s theme martini bar entertains a dressed-up lobby crowd as well as overflow guests from the nearby café restaurant. Rooftop Mix Restaurant, by Alain Ducasse, offers gourmet cuisine and a vibrant nightlife lounge with some of the best views in Vegas. A newly opened Bathhouse Spa boasts a lavish fitness area and European day spa with modernist designer theme. The hotel shares most common areas with the Mandalay Bay, forcing guests to utilize the casino and resort areas of the main Mandalay Bay Hotel (connected through a short corridor) including it's ocean-size wave pool and beach club.
The Room:
Upon opening, THEHotel was Vegas’ most stylish hotel with oversize guests rooms boasting multiple plasma-screen televisions, in-room cocktail bars and deep-soaking spa bathtubs. A hotel within a hotel, this all-suite resort manages to be everything the Four Seasons Las Vegas fails at - namely a stylish high-end hotel. The 43-floor hotel tower offers some of the best views of Vegas, as long as you’re facing the Strip, with apartment-minded living rooms designed with utilitarian sofas, club chair and masculine writing desks. We’d prefer wood floors and a bit more of the loft vibe, instead of the commercial grade carpeting and conservative color selections. The modest bedroom areas of the standard guest rooms feature Queen or King bed with poly-cotton sheets and European duvet covers – connecting to the main bathroom with branded-toiletries, deep soaking tubs and marble vanities that are still the best in Vegas.
