The Best Parties of Coachella 2014

April 09, 2014 11.28 AM

For those that have never been, Coachella is a weekend music festival just outside of Palm Springs that’s considered one of the world’s top music festivals. For 2014, a carnival-style venue of tents and outdoor grandstand offers a menagerie of performances by Arcade Fire, Calvin Harris, Ellie Goulding, Beck, Kid Cudi, Lana Del Rey, Lorde, Muse, Nas, Outkast, Solange, Skrillex, Pharrell, Foster the People and Queens of the Stone Age " over two weekends beginning April 11th. Tickets are long sold out but still available on the second-hand market from around $500 for general admission and $950 for VIP admission. Those that salivate over such a musical offering find a cumbersome drive from anywhere in the desert to Empire Polo Fields near Indo, California that includes cumbersome lines to park, lines to get in, lines to get a drink, lines to use the bathroom and lines to get inside the actual tents when someone you want to see is performing. Interspersed in the mix are celebrities wearing their boho best (or worst) as inebriated and shirtless revelers party like it’s Coachella - which you will invariably adore and loathe.

Around the desert are an array of hosted events for Coachella, most of which sponsored by corporate mega-brands, that offers a swathe of parties even before the festival has actually started. Filter Magazine's 12th Annual Yacht Club gets off on Thursday with performances by Mayer Hawthorne and ASTR while the Ace Hotel hosts its Desert lounge series with Danny Masterson and a pop-up by Marc By Marc Jacobs.  Other Palm Springs hotels hosting events include The Saguaro with its musical poolside mixers, Guess! at the Viceroy and Parker Palm Springs that’s taken over by Harper’s Bazaar over the course of both weekends. The new Hard Rock Hotel also gets in on the action with a line-up of international house DJs like A-Trak at its LED Day Club. More exclusive events will be found at an selection of private estates from La Quinta to Palm Springs including Soho House that’s taken over the Merv Griffin Estate this year and LA’s Bootsy Bellows at a secret poolside location in Rancho Mirage.
