A cozy sidewalk frontage dotted in farmhouse tables leads to a single-door glass entryway and one of Berlin’s most storied Austrian eateries. Despite its traditional menu of southern German and Austrian specialties, the interior dining room couldn’t be more modern with its soothing color palette of creamy leather booths and bleach-wood tables interspersed with chunky lamps covered in soft, patterned shades. At the far end of the dining room, an installation of stacked timber leaves a lasting visual as well as fragrant scene. Except for a spare set of deer antlers, walls are otherwise entirely bare with a 6-seat bar area offering solo dining available on a walk-in basis.

The Food

A seasonal menu includes appetizers of clarified tomato soup with basil peach sorbet, wiener schnitzel with Swabian potato salad and ravioli stuffed with ground veal. Main course is an equally innovative presentation of pearl barley risotto with asparagus and walnut brittle, braised leg of venison with herb dumpling and fried fillet of char with potato apple puree. An on-site bakery serves up dessert of apple strudel with vanilla sauce and rhubarb-parfait on a chocolate crisp.

Last Word

Epicurean Austrian eatery with astute design aesthetic serves up traditional Viennese faire with on-site bakery.
