Behind the black iron windows of this corner storefront, Monteverde is the inaugural kitchen of former Spiaggia chef Sarah Grueneberg. For those unfamiliar with Grueneberg, her playful twist on classic Italian finds a more fitting dining room in Chicago’s Fulton Market. A deconstructed space is lined in raw wood floors with exposed concrete ceiling and eclectic mix of mid-century and industrial decor.
A lively happy hour leads into a nightly dinner service of small plate calabrese with fired chicken livers, ocean trout with yogurt and Oma’s green salad. Pasta course is our favorite with cacio e pepe made with four kinds of pepper and whey, parppadelle with lamb ragu and a great cannelloni with saltimbocca and prosciutto. Main course offers family-style presentations of Neapolitan meatballs, skate schnitzel and rib eye.
