Hotel Type

Boutique Apartment Hotel

It's located in the hippest area of Berlin, a sparkling-white row of pre-war houses located in Berlin's Mitte district. In the shade of the iconic East Berlin TV Tower, the hotel is situated amongst a neighborhood of one-off boutiques, art galleries and groovy bars. Designed by London-based architects Silvestrin/Salmaso, Lux 11 is more of an apartment hotel offering loft-style flats and serviced lobby area. The lobby is an all-white jewel of minimalist design with sleek loungers and uncomfortable chairs amongst a buzzing scene of local artists and abstract video installations on surrounding walls. A central bar area offers frill-free barstools and counter seating surrounded by several upholstered booths with poorly selected fuchsia pillows. A free-flowing restaurant offers well-sized Italian-fusion menu with awkward Asian accents that seem forced.

Guests should be aware that the front desk is only serviced until midnight, meaning that the lobby is virtually abandoned by anyone with any ability to assist in room key issues or complaints throughout the night. With a name like Lux 11, a concerned morning inquiry at the front desk resulted in an explanation that the hotel was named after its location on Rosa-Luxembourg Straße and was not meant to allude to any level of luxury. Let there be no mistaking, Lux 11 is fun and young and modern but in no way luxurious. On a positive note, a large in-house beauty salon and spa is one of the best in town with competent hairstyling and beauty treatments available on short notice.

The Room

A well-conceived lobby area leads to large expectations for the guest apartments. The pre-war building has lackluster hallways with uninspiring doors and chrome hardware. The 72 apartments are decorated with a naturalist’s aesthetic with elements of Asian influence and European design. Antique windows overlook the surrounding neighborhood and green belt, framed by tasteful thick drapery. Rooms are designed with concrete floors and natural woods offering free-flowing living spaces with fully outfitted kitchenettes and living areas. Décor is minimalist to an extreme with impractical seating area more befitting of a nightclub than comfortable city apartment. Bathrooms are well designed, raised on an altar-like landing in the middle of the room with rain shower and porcelain sink perched on a concrete block. Techy-feature like recessed flat-screen TVS and speedy Wi-fi makes the hotel a hit with business clients. But summer travelers should be aware that guestrooms are not air-conditioned, meaning that muggy August nights are most intolerable. If arriving between June and September you may ant to play it safe and book elsewhere.
