Hotel Type: City Hotel

The Scene:
A Hollywood landmark that miraculously wasn't torn-down or renovated past recognition, Sunset Tower was built in 1929 by Leland Bryant as a luxury apartment residence along West Hollywood's Sunset Strip. Over its history the building has changed hands and names from the St. James Club to most-recently The Argyle. In 2001 Jeff Klein who also owns NYC's City Club Hotel acquired the hotel, whose former-residents include Frank Sinatra and Howard Hughes. Klein embarked on the hotel's most-extensive renovation to date. The result is a modern deco marvel centrally located on the Sunset Strip offering a small planted motor court leading into the main lobby. The central reception area features rich wood paneling and manicured staff in a dark and subdued atmosphere.

Off the main lobby is a small lounge area leading to the entrance of the Tower Bar. Having made headlines with super star diners like Jennifer Anniston and Harvey Weinstein, the restaurant offers a gentlemanly setting with crackling fireplace and cozy banquettes overlooking the LA skyline.  An adjacent pool area, at the back of the hotel, offers further views as well as The Terrace restaurant with its casual luncheon menu and late-night cocktail crowd. Recently a new spa debuted near the main pool area, featuring a boutique style rejuvenation center with massages, facials and array of beauty treatments.

The Room:
The Sunset Tower was no easy renovation for hotelier Jeff Klein, The building was in long need of repairs and renovations that most considered too costly for LA room prices. Regardless, Klein went on to complete a top-to-bottom renovation of all guest rooms and suites. Standard guest rooms are compact with rather dark living areas and furnishings well selected with stylish spins on classic ‘50s designs. Bathrooms are creamy beige with limestone floors and rain showers offering Kiehl’s bath products. Junior Suites offer more space to unwind as well as larger windows letting in a bit more sunlight and views of downtown Los Angeles. Living rooms are decorated in rich browns and velvety cream colors with colorful throw pillows and black-and-white photos. Two townhouse suites are split between two floors with decadent white spiral staircase and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the Hollywood Hills. For those looking for the best, a top-floor penthouse suite (featured in The Italian Job) is one of the best in the city with 2,000-square foot planted rooftop patio, formal dining room and daybed sunroom perfect for a Hollywood love affair.
