A 30-minute drive from Punta del Este, Jose Ignacio is a sleepy coastal paradise conceived amongst broad white-sand beaches and a mid-century lighthouse. The town has no stoplights, no mega-hotels and no structure over two-stories. Amongst the winding dirt roads of suspended modernist houses and beach villas is a central street of a few restaurants and this art-inspired 6-room hotel. Constructed of sandstone and native materials, a wooden gate opens to a bold-blue and pink painted courtyard leading to the main hotel lobby. Decorated in comfy couches, creaky-wooden chairs and weathered artwork, the reception area could just as well be someone's living room. Friendly staff maintains the relaxed vibe, advising of a rooftop patio with views of the ocean and the daily continental breakfast composed of fresh 'breads' and meat platter.
The Room
With five well-conceived rooms and one two-bedroom apartment, the hotel offers a sedate atmosphere that compliments the laidback nature of Jose Ignacio. White-painted brick walls are decorated with minimal decoration and billowing white linens curtains. Smaller rooms feature a king-size bed with painted concrete floors and small seating area composed of a shabby-chic couch and two director’s chairs. A larger loft room offers a more distinctive Asian-style with dark freestanding bed and Balinese artistry. The largest room, the apartment, offers a full kitchen as well as an additional bedroom for families of personal staff. Bathrooms are simple with straightforward white-porcelain lavatories and stall showers in smaller rooms, or soaking tub in the apartment suite, with handmade soaps and candles.
