By the end of 2008, several new hotels will dominate the Los Angeles landscape including The London in West Hollywood and Thompson Beverly Hills. But perhaps the best hotel opening this year is not plastered on local billboards or blogs but whispered by Hollywood insiders as a trendsetting property even they wouldn't mind staying. Created by Palisades Development Group, a loft-minded architectural firm that turned several warehouses in Venice into prized urban residences, debuts its first condo-hotel prototype in a four-story brick-and-mortar property located on a residential street corner of West Hollywood.

Unlike the sterile white-and-metal prototype of almost every loft being built in the area, Palihouse utilizes natural stones and well-worn textures to create a hotel and residence that looks like it's been around for ages. Reminiscent of London's Soho Hotel, the lobby features an evolved design aesthetic lacking in Southern California hotels with details like mosaic tile floor with richly colored walls and comfy wingback chairs clustered abound the odd-bicycle or headless porcelain dog. The occasional DJ presides over a small mixing table that booms soft lounge anthems on busier weekends. Less gimmicky than Wearstler and sexier than Klein's Sunset Tower, the hotel blends seamlessly into the neighborhood with small espresso bar of bistro seating and alcove library for lingering locals. The Hall Brasserie, the in-house restaurant open to the public and hotel guests, is arranged with ebonized chairs and sliding glass doors that open to a center courtyard of Chattahoochee floors and strewn fairy lights.

The Room

The Palihouse Holloway is modeled after Hollywood’s historic apartment hotels of the ’30s and ‘40s, like The St. James Club and El Royale, where Marilyn Monroe and Howard Hughes once resided. Designed to suit the needs of business travelers staying longer than five days, the hotel is equipped with loft-style apartments and suites equipped with full kitchens and all-day room service. Stretching across four-floors of a West Hollywood mid-rise, the building was designed to insulate rooms against noise and congestion while providing free-flowing architectural spaces. Entry-level rooms feature heavy-grade carpeting and built-in headboards with floating framed images and varsity striped throws. Larger suites offer full living areas with collector-quality artwork on honey-walnut hardwood floors with tufted white-leather sofa topped-off with Britannia-theme pillow. One and two bedroom residences include fully functional kitchens of veiny white marble countertops with stainless-steel appliances and four-top dining room, there’s also a washer and dryer in most units. Bathrooms are a mix of wood and marble with slatted-walnut paneling and clean marble-slab sinks with aromatic C.O. Bigelow toiletries.
