Budget-Chic Hotel

It's known around Paris as fashion-icon Christian Lacroix's hotel, but in actuality he acted as the interior designer of this budget-chic hideaway in the Marais. Located in a former pastry bakery on a romantic corner of one-way streets, the hotel features a storybook façade leading to a main floor reception area with small espresso lounge. The all-day café is a delightful mix of traditional Paris bistro and quirky lobby bar attracting morning cappuccino addicts and afternoon tea scene popular with the local fashion set. A friendly staff offers the courteousness of a family-owner hotel acquainting guests to the hotel's 17-rooms and local landmarks that include the Picasso museum, Pompidou Museum and numerous nightlife options of the area. While you won't find yourself enjoying the varied amenities one expects of a Paris hotel, like in-house gym or spa or concierge, the price more than makes up for the fact that all you'll be getting is a really colorful room.

The Room

One of the most dramatic of French fashion designers, Lacroix kept much of the hotel’s common spaces surprisingly under the radar. Additionally, there weren’t many changes to the property’s original architecture instead choosing to keep most of the small property fully intact. Guests walk down narrow corridors leading do rich black-lacquered doors opening to single room design sanctuaries. Smaller than your average Paris hotel room, eccentric details like yellow-printed wallpaper and sexy wooden floors or shag rugs make the modest of the modest spaces. Matching draperies open to reveal period windows and views of the surrounding neighborhood and its colo0rful collection residents. Beds are well fluffed with high thread count linens and faux fur blankets on top of cushy down comforters. Furnishings lean towards the cheap thrill with molded-plastic tulip chairs, mirrored side tables and compact writing desks next to wobbly plasma TV’s on metal pedestals. Bathrooms show a few more design fireworks including heart-shaped antique mirrors, hunting murals around the commode and sunken spa tubs in larger room categories.
