Amongst the Vogue-fueled hype of Jose Ignacio and high-rise excess of Punta del Este, La Barra stands as a tranquil middle ground that's breaking out of its suburban mold. Just beyond the rolling dunes and row of coastal pines, Aaron Hojman offers a posada bohemia clad in vintage railway bricks, reclaimed windows and industrial siding that's become the hottest beach pad in town. Visitors arrive to an L-shaped property accessed via and industrial staircase leading to a deconstructed reception area that looks more like the private study of Sigmund Freud.

Zinc's hard edges of industrial walls and salvaged windows are offset by a homey design of checkered floors derived from railroad ties lining long corridors with stacks of vintage books atop old church pews. The clientele includes well-read fashionistas looking for the latest boutique hotspot as well as family guests and younger relatives of the owner running about. Guests dine in a quirky diner-style restaurant with retro fridge and antique chairs discovered at the Montevideo stock market.

The Room

Like staying at a private home of someone with exquisite design taste, Casa Zinc forges a bold new look in Punta hospitality arranged within three-separate guest room categories including King Studio, Library King and Mirador with Queen-size bed. Rooms are arranged along picturesque hallways leading to bold blue doors towering over 10-feet opening to subdued spaces surrounded in vintage brick walls with blue wainscoting coming to hip-level. The antithesis to Punta’s usual all-white and stone hotel spaces, these rooms are heavy on details with beds drawn with comfy quilts next to antique club chair or wheeled office chairs where a stack of books is almost always within hand’s reach. Bathrooms are equally eclectic with salvaged white pedestal sinks, antique clawfoot tubs and retro chrome fixtures that offset gleaming while tile walls.
