City Hotel

Located on an elevated bluff overlooking the Sunset Strip, Hollywood's quintessential glamour hotel offers a dazzling gothic façade and decadent past that spans movie history. The front driveway is always packed, guarded by a security detailed and smartly dressed clipboard attendant who answers only to owner Andre Balazs. Guests enter the hotel through a whitewashed porch, into a lonely elevator area that brings guests into the main lobby. The interior space is more understated than one would ever expect, staff is sparse and common ways look much as they did in the '50s. The reception area features a small rack of tabloid and fashion magazines that most are too embarrassed to pick up given the hotel's clientele. A sweeping lobby area features period couches and retro seating areas surrounded by flying buttresses (the architectural kind) and glimpses of gothic gargoyles on the outdoor terrace. The courtyard is home to a be-seen restaurant with one of the city's best breakfasts and tightest dinner reservations, if not ruined by cellphone-obsessed publicist or ambitious celeb-gawker.

The Room

Guests of the Chateau tend to stay for weeks at a time, often times trading in their glitzy hillside palaces for a secluded bungalow or penthouse address. The common hallways are lined in thick carpeting that seems to come from a different era. Thick all-wood doors open to crisp living areas offering period moldings and hardwood flooring. The rooms of the hotel are comfy chic with aged furnishings and period artwork hung in asymmetrical patterns. Even the penthouse is surprisingly unpretentious with '50s bathrooms, a retro kitchen and furniture that look like it was plucked in Monty Cliff’s parlor room. Rooms feature head-on views of the LA skyline or more quiet side streets of the Hollywood Hills. Conveniences like designer bath products, 400-thread count linens and gourmet-laden mini-bar are unique to the hotel and make it one of the best in the city, if not country. Bathrooms offer luxurious accessories like plush terry cloth robes, imported lotions, candles and baths that demand for soaking. Catering to Hollywood’s be-seen set, the hotel insists that no extravagance is too bold with some rooms even offering fully stocked kitchens to meet a star’s various dietary requirements. The hotel’s pool area is located on the opposite side of the main entrance, surrounded by several bungalows and mature shade trees. The bungalows offer a separate entrance from the main hotel and further extravagances like entertainment centers and furnished terraces.
