Hotel Type

Luxury Hotel

For anyone unaware of NYC residential geography, this part of Madison Avenue is where the aristocratic establishment calls home in $10-million dollar apartments and Central Park location home to galleries like Gagosian and Acquavella as well as high-end shops like Tom Ford, Chanel and Gucci. Housed within an already prestigious 1927 landmark high-rise, The Mark has been meticulously remodeled and re-imagined by French designer Jacque Grand who's clients include Valentino, Yves Saint-Laurent and Karl Lagerfeld. Unlike the sometimes touristy-vibe one gets at the Plaza or business-minded chill of the Peninsula or Four Seasons, The Mark feels like a private apartment complete with distinguished doorman full of good recommendations and glamorous striped black-and-white marble entryway free of camera-flashbulbs.

Smaller than the typical luxury hotel, the lobby is more cozy than you expect with intimate seating area of handmade club chairs with a '20s Paris zigzag details and artwork that wouldn't look out of place at a local high-end gallery. With no real spa, a well-equipped fitness center by John Sitara is open 24-hours a day as well as a Frederic Fekkai Salon to make sure no hair is out of place before making your Upper East Side debut. In-house Restaurant by Jean-Georges was designed by Grange in contrasting elements of deco and modern art-nouveau with oval tables planted in a feast of scrambled egg brunches, veal Milanese lunches and Truffle-topped fillet dinners. The Mark Bar takes a more eclectic design approach with cow-print seating area opposite a curving bar lined in sturdy barstools aglow in reddish amber lighting.

The Room

The Mark makes an immediate impression simply by the level of personal service and touches that extend from check-in to turn-sown. Grange himself, not just some underling within the design group like many one-name designers, has personally decorated each room apparent in the attractive hallways with alcove ceiling and pin-stripe carpets. Entry-level superior courtyard rooms overlook neighboring townhouses with 400-sq. ft. of sycamore wood furnishings and nickel lamps on tables arranged in personal French bric-a-brac. Upholstered headboards in subtle striped-linen hover over beds lined in Quagliotti sheets and fluffy feather pillows. Built-in closets are paneled in creamy beige and ebonized wood detailing fit for Choos and Chanel suits with mini-bar hidden behind a far panel. Bathrooms bring more striped black and white marble to the floors with double-basin white marble vanities and deep soaking tubs with heavy chrome fixtures. Tower suites come with custom kitchens specially designed by Piero Lissoni for Boffi, with black granite countertops and appliances from Gaggenau, Miele and Sub-Zero.
