In recent years everyone from the NY Times to Vogue has been obsessed with the opening of The Setai Jose Ignacio whilst under their noses a homegrown hotel concept known as Vik Retreats have unveiled a heralded country estate 15-minutes outside Jose Ignacio in Laguna Garzon and now one of the decade's best architectural hotels in Jose Ignacio Village. We've known this sleepy beach town since the days that Mallmann operated his Los Negroes eatery and but two hotel options were available. Now Jose Ignacio is home to this all-villa seaside luxury hotel located on the village's south-facing beach just off the main entrance of town just up the sand from Pousada del Faro and across the small peninsula from La Huella and Brava Beach.
While often compared to St. Tropez and St. Barts, Jose Ignacio is really better than both (for now) if your idea of beach bliss is gravel roads and youthful locals in skimpy swimwear that go by first name at the local coffee shop that's also a deli and pizzeria. Playa Vik is a visual juxtaposition to everything around in a sculptural statement of teak, stone and glass dug into the hillside with grassy lawns and 75-foot pool with concrete cantilevered edge. The inside property works much like its Estancia Vik sibling with communal living areas and a sophisticated design edge heavy on modern art.
A Pavilion houses a 40-foot wine cellar with game room and outdoor terrace with submerged fire pit surrounded in fluffy pillows and blankets for watching the waves break just feet away. Summertime offers nightly barbecues and special dinners geared towards weeklong guests, minimum night stay is around 7-nights during New Year's, slower times with an in-house eatery open to the public. When not at the beach of nearby shopping of La Barra or Punta, a gym and small spa offer on-request services in addition to open use of all riding stables and outdoor activities of Estanica Vik.
Far smaller than its exaggerated titanium and glass façade looks, Playa Vik is home to just six casitas with grassy rooftops and subtle environmental nods like sustainable wood decks and water preservation system. These casitas contain a series of guest suites where local and regional designers were given full reign to create floors with asymmetrical painting in blue and white, walls strew with decorative scribbling and integrated museum-quality art collection that compliments without dominating these beach-minded spaces. Rooms named Mar, Exodus and Blanca are meticulously presented with oversize living and sleeping area with walls of sliding glass that conceal fully private balconies and outdoor living spaces. Four even larger suite-category rooms feature beachfront location and rental alternative for longer summer stays in Jose Ignacio.
