Luxury Boutique Hotel
It's a neighborhood full of one-off hotel gems like Jeff Klein's City Club, but The Chatwal is in a league of its own now in this Stanford White-designed building retooled by Thierry Despont into one of New York's most iconic art deco landmarks. A buzzing neighborhood for theater lovers and NYC virgins directly across form The Town Hall theater, a simple marquee and rod-iron doorway lead to an upstairs lobby arranged in leather banquettes with rounded metal and steamship-inspired deco details including a two story mural.
At the center of the Chatwal is the Lamb's Club, Geoffrey Zakaraian's latest hotpsot eatery and lounge located offering lively theater dining scene of media brass and starlet darlings that's recently usurped Monkey Bar as NYC's it-spot du jour. Décor moves from bright and airy to dark and moody from a cozy lobby bar to swank dining room, flanked by a gigantic 18th century fireplace and Mao-red furnishings also designed by Despont. Although small in size the hotel is surprisingly big on amenities. In-house Chatwal Spa by Kashmere offers fitness center and basement level saltwater lap pool in addition to three treatment rooms offering a boutique experience of facials and aroma massages as well as occasional thespian in the buff.
The Room
Entry-level guest rooms are larger than most in NYC, around 300-sq. ft. of sophisticated designed leather-upholstered wardrobe with tailored interiors, suede covered walls with subway artwork opposite Queen-size beds outfitted in Frette linens. On request, some rooms even in the entry-level category feature large outdoor terrace with lounge arrangements and heated floors. Masculine bathroom with dark marble tiling and chrome detailing include collection of unique Asprey-branded toiletries from London. Rooms can be combined to rent out entire floors equaling three bedroom suites or simply book the Penthouse two-bedroom with kitchenette and dining room for late-night soirees and room service ala cut waiter with silver tray from Lambs Club.
