Historic Hotel
The evolution of South Beach hotels has led to two main categories; the monolith mega-resorts like the Fontainebleau and W South Beach and smaller deco-landmarks like the Delano and Raleigh. The Shelborne joins the later, part of the 40s building boom that resulted in such properties around Collins Avenue that define Miami Beach architecture. Fresh off a two year renovation by hotelier Keith Menin, who owns the Bentley and Sanctuary South Beach; visitors arrive to a glimmering circular portico and glassy lobby captured in black-and-décor between marble floors and dramatic chandeliers.
A beachfront location means sandy beach club with cabana cocktail service in addition to a flirty new pool deck trimmed in sleek white loungers, row of poolside cabanas and access to on-site Lucy's Cantina Royale and Bar Tanaka. Those looking for a more formal restaurant can dine during the evening at Vesper, the main dining room of the property offering destination gourmet eatery with American brasserie flair. Under the main lobby is also a new cabaret lounge with nightly bar scene offering dance bar and impromptu karaoke scene that recalls the heyday of Miami Beach in the 50s and 60s.
The Room
A variety of room categories ranging from standard accommodations to suites and townhouses offer a modern spin on deco design with elements of Hollywood regency and modern Italian thrown in the mix. Standard rooms are small in size but large in style with white and black color palette amongst walls covered in sheer fabric, sculptural white desks and bed set against white upholstered headboards. Chandleier grab the attention for corner spaces as well as the occasional porcelain horse erupting as objet d’arte from room walls. Townhouse-level accommodations offer 2,500-sq. ft. of space with full kitchens and formal dining rooms as well as premium ocean views and amenities like an in-room cocktail bar and double bathroom layout.
