It opened with a whisper, Avi Brosh's latest installment of Palihouse that comes to life in a 1927 residential hotel in Santa Monica. A distinguished Spanish Colonial facade sits just north of 3rd Street Promenade in one of the best locations of any Santa Monica hotel, walking distance to nearby shops of Montana as well as the restaurants of Ocean Avenue. Inside, a lobby lounge is decorated like a more-updated version of the Chateau Marmont or Soho House with less stairs and terracotta floors, ebonized rafter ceiling and fashionable vintage aesthetic that feels old and new all at the same time. Guest check-in comes at a old-school reception complete with letter slots and mannered staff with nodes of Victorian and Gothic design that extend to an old wooden staircase that traces the spine of the building. Much like its West Hollywood sibling, a stylish restaurant hosts guests and actual residents within a moody dining room with emerald-velvet booths and all-day bar. The type of iconic hotel that will likely outlive all of us, Brosh proves the ability to create timeless spaces that are beyond LA trend.
The Room
Entry-level classic rooms are bright, simple spaces with elements of British design from Queen Anne headboards and taxidermy art to heavy drapery and plaid-upholstered seating options. Studio Residences come with a lot more space as well as full kitchens in colors of putty and grey fog with bistro dining area similar to those found at the Chateau Marmont. Larger one-bedrooms come with separate living and bedrooms with original beam ceiling and larger picture windows that face a greenbelt view or courtyard. Bathrooms feature a mix of white subway tile walls and in-lay hexagon floors. Further in-house perks include complimentary bicycle rental, Dean & Deluca mini-bars and pet concierge.
