Villa Resort

It's an off the radar oasis created by an Italian businessman that intended to create a Mexican version of Porto Cervo along the Pacific Coast. Decades later his vision is a reality, although some might contest it's even better. Careyes is unlike any other place you will ever visit with an insider's infrastructure of private villas and casitas that replace the usual hotel confines and allows visitors to experience it like a true local. It's located along the Costalegre between Puerto Vallarta and Manzanillo - the latter its most direct commercial airport. First-timers arrive unsure of what to expect, likely lured by posh friends or glamorous tales of New Year's Eve parties and soirees that linger from house to house. The resort itself comes along a forested hilltop and behind gates that actually close and secure by night. It's here that highway yields to cobblestones and a series of impossibly manicured streets link private estates, beach clubs and mega-villas to the palm-strewn beach below.

The Room

With no proper hotel, a visit to Costa Careyes usually comes with a private casita or villa rental. The most affordable option is a series of private beachfront casitas next to Playa Rosa beach club that offer direct sea access and terraces along the water’s edge. Inside, simple thatch roof architecture features a spare décor and perks like morning breakfast by a dedicated staff. Casitas de las Flores is the next level up of accommodations with an array of one to four-bedroom casitas just south of the main waterfront with panoramic views and private plunge pools. Those renting villas have the option of booking anywhere from two to four bedrooms with exclusive use, offering sophisticated design palettes and full staff that includes daily breakfast and lunch/dinner included in the price. Those looking for the best will want to book into Sol de Orient that’s sits on a promontory overlooking all of Careyes with indoor/outdoor architecture that impresses fickle VIPs and celebrities.
