Design

In its fifth installment to date, Edition makes its New York debut within the iconic Met Life clock tower in a corner of burgeoning downtown. Curated by Ian Schrager and owned by Marriott, the property mixes contemporary luxury with urban coolness. An airy, serine lobby is a continuum of Schrager's work at Gramercy Park and London's own Edition, offering playful spaces that adapt from afternoon tea to late-night romp with a dimming of light and turn of the speaker volume. Wood paneled interiors mix soothing, neutral tones with elegantly upholstered decor amid spare artwork and towering ceilings. In-house restaurant The Clocktower is presided by Jason Atherton that also helms the London property, featuring British cuisine with local farm-to-table ingredients. Afterwards, Gold Bar offers a sophisticated afterhours rendezvous trimmed in herringbone floors and scotch-drinking vibe with art installation by Eric Schmitt.

The Room

In an area dotted with trendy hotels from the Nomad to the Ace Hotel, Edition New York is a monolith property worthy of its iconic silhouette that houses 273 unique guest rooms and suites. Spaces embody the Schrager’s use of spare, minimal silhouettes enhanced by playful details that sometimes age faster than most hotels. Think of the Hudson, Royalton and Paramount after all. All rooms offer tasteful oak floors and dark oak wood-paneled foyers that exude the charm of a private residence. Large, oversize windows frame city views above Madison Square Park with upper categories overlooking the Empire State Building. While some might complain the rooms lack character and spirit, Loft Rooms and Madison Suite offer a bit more personal panache.
