Boutique Hotel

For those willing to forsake the hedonist indulgences of the Byblos Hotel, St. Tropez is offering a new crop of boutique and design hotels for trend-conscious travelers. Located off the Place des Lices (central St. Tropez), a historical 1930's mansion owned by a French socialite as a gift from a beloved military general is transformed into a colonial Indian hideaway and boutique hotel. Amidst a bumper-to-bumper street of fancy cars and sidewalk fashionistas, a stately masonry façade succumbs to distressed oak doors opening to a breezy lobby area with hand-sewn rugs and suspended glass lanterns. The main reception, managed by former Byblos-employees, features a small counter opposite a casual lounge area with inset artwork. The in-house restaurant and a small library bar offers Indian cuisine and beverage specialties that usually spill-out onto the patio. Perhaps one of the prettiest outdoor areas of any of the new local boutique hotels, a mosaic swimming pool is surrounded by rattan "honeymoon" daybeds and blooming garden of fruit trees. For spa-minded guests, a Turkish bath and series of small treatment rooms offer massages, facials and European wraps.

The Room

Like staying at a posh friend’s house in the South of France, this villa-minded hotel offers refined French styling with a comfortable but never-kitschy sense of Indian whimsy. The main hotel is spread over three floors, intersected by a grand staircase, connecting 12 individual guest suites to the main lobby. Rooms vary between modestly sized queens to larges suites with poster beds and free-form living areas. All rooms offer hand-selected art and imported craftworks from Indonesia and India selected by the hotel owners. The artwork is displayed on recreated Indian furnishings, in all-white spaces and topped off with poorly selected ceiling fans. Modest bathrooms are well-equipped with mirrored walls, rain showers and the occasional freestanding bathtub atop mahogany pedestal. For larger groups, the hotel is also available for as a complete rental delivering all 12 rooms and the kitchen for exclusive usage.
