2017 is one of the busiest years we can remember for hotel openings,
with amazing brands like Aman and Firmdale, Soho House and Cheval Blanc
readying to change the way we think of destinations like Shanghai,
Mumbai and Mexico's Costa Alegre. Established hotspots get a bit of
competition, like in New York, where Firmdale
doubles-down in February with The Whitby Hotel. The 86-room property
in burgeoning Midtown will feature its ubiquitous Kit Kemp decor and
amenities including a 130-seat cinema and Brit eatery. Aman Shanghai
will equally wow, incorporating “a village of historic dwellings
surrounded by an imported camphor forest” late this summer to create a
spectacular urban resort just outside of the city.
In London, Soho House is finishing touches on The Ned,
its first collaboration with American hotelier Sydell Group as well as
wrapping up properties in Mumbai and Amsterdam. Meanwhile, Four Seasons
will debut its worthiest London address yet at Ten Trinity Square
in January with a 100-room hotel and own private members club along one
of London's most famous squares. Rosewood will alas unveil the remodel
of Hotel de Crillon in Paris with two brand-new suites designed by Karl Lagerfeld. And in the German capital, Provocateur Berlin
adds a burlesque-themed hotel to the city's repertoire with 59 rooms
and seductive Indochine-inspired restaurant. In Cape Town, The Silo
(pictured) transforms a former-grain silo along the V&A Waterfront
into a destination boutique hotel that's also home to the much
anticipated Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa. The hotel will feature a glass pool and bar with stunning views of Table Mountain opening later this summer.
In the US, Four Seasons at The Surf Club
brings a worthier address to Miami within a 1930s member's club
redesigned by Richard Meier. But it's in LA that you’ll find the most
hotel openings from The Dream Hollywood and Freehand LA in downtown to Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills
with its Jean-Georges Vongerichten restaurant and rooftop pool. Further
south on Mexico's Pacific Coast, near long-time favorite Cuixmala and
Careyes, LVMH’s Cheval Blanc has broken ground on a game changing
property in Chamela Bay that will alas put Costa Alegre on the luxury
map and give Aman some viable competition.
Perhaps the final year for a while of ambitious South American openings, Awasi Iguazú
brings a stunning eco-design resort to Argentina’s Iguazú Falls - one
of the world’s largest waterfalls. Set to open by the end of 2017, each
of its 14 villas features a private plunge pool and impeccable
amenities. In Sao Paulo, Oetker Collection will debut Palacio Tangara
in the city's Burle Marx Park. Its 141 guest rooms will overlook the
park's renowned wildlife from private terraces, a poolside lounge and
own Jean-Georges Vongerichten. But its perhaps Brazil's Fasano Hotel
that will make the most stunning debut of 2017, with its Fasano Salvador in the Bahia capital and far more ambitious Hotel Fasano Angra dos Reis.
The epic, architectural resort will feature a marina, golf course and
two restaurants by restaurateur Rogério Fasano opening in late-April and
sure to make the it-list of most every travel magazine.
