The granola-fication of Palm Springs

October 30, 2013 08.58 PM

Long before there was mid-century design in Palm Springs, a Spanish-influenced homestead aesthetic ruled most of its architecture with terracotta roofs and stacked-stone walls. Today, those with the foresight to see beyond flat-topped glass and steel architecture are reinterpreting ranchero grandeur with an eco-sensibility. The granola-fication of Palm Springs could first be seen at the Ace Hotel with its desert-minded menu infused with local produce and eggs when possible as well as in the rooms with their reclaimed canvas walls and reclaimed bric-a-brac. Then there are restaurants like Cheeky’s with its locally grown, and preferably organic food. And then there’s lesser-known Palm Greens Café that’s located in a mini-mall but with a menu of vegan, organic and wild-caught dishes. And now there’s Doug and Josie Smith new Sparrows Hotel that offers the former-Korakia owners in an overhauled Palm Canyon motel that’s been infused with a pioneer glamour that has one of the most stylish room concepts we’ve seen in a while.
