Located in a six-story building off of Bond Street, Dover Street Market is a couture creation by Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garçons that redefines the conventional department store. The store features an endless slate of high-street designers that maintain their own individual retail spaces within the store, from the layout of the clothes to the concept of the design. Labels include Raf Simons, Lanvin, Hedi Slimane, Thom Browne and Ann Demeulemeester just to name a few. ""I want to create a kind of market where various creators from various fields gather together and encounter each other in an ongoing atmosphere of beautiful chaos," says Rei Kawakubo, "the mixing up and coming together of different kindred souls who all share a strong personal vision."

Tips

One of the best designer shopping experiences available, be sure to venture away from the clothes to see the selection of housewares and furnishings before heading to the in-house café.

Last Word

The store recreates the vintage feel of the surrounding area through a series of mini-boutiques and designer outposts that make up the collaborative marketplace. The space was designed with the assistance of local set decorators who utilized steel beams, exposed brick walls and minimalist furnishings. At times the space feels incomplete or almost like a building site, with deconstructed fashion cases and abstract designs showcasing various fashion designers and collections. A central check-out area is contained within a shack-like structure, where its not uncommon to see anyone from John Galliano to Gwyneth Paltrow swiping their way to happiness.
