trendspotter

Galeria Hilario Galguera is known by international art collectors as the top independent gallery in Mexico City that’s a regular on the exhibition ciruit for uber-artists like Damien Hirst who christened the space at its 2006 opening with his first-ever Latin American showing of The Death of God: Towards a Better Understanding of Life and God Without God Aboard the Ship of Fools. A serene space of of long open architecture, shiny concrete floors and typical gallery white walls attract an upper-crust set of collectors and burgeoning artists.

Tips

In recent years the gallery has expanded its base with an annex at Leipzig’s Spinnerei complex offering works by mostly Latin American artists.

Last Word

Aside from Hirst, look for offerings by David Bailey, James Brown, Daniel Buren and Jannis Kounelis as well as other up-and-coming local Mexico City artists.
