Boutique Hotel
Cruise ship chic meets boxy boutique hotel, the Maritime is a whimsical design property catering to New York's love affair with overnight party pads. Exploiting the former headquarters of the National Maritime Union of America, the Chelsea-chic hostelry replaces 50/50 cotton sheets and bunk bed-stacked seamen with plasma TVs, sexy turndown service and lively lobby scene. The hotel is home to three restaurants, two bars and even a neighboring gay club popular with the fashion-set. Facing the Hudson, its porthole-windows and ceramic tile facade is gussied-up with a courtyard garden popular for the local 9 to 5-set during warmer spring and summer months. Given the overall waterborne-theme, noticeably missing is a swimming pool to go with the rooftop cabana club with it's Chinese lanterns and bright colors that ooze Country Time lemonade moments while watching the twinkling lights of Manhattan.
The Room
Think cruise ship stateroom with upgraded amenities like teak-paneled walls, circular chandeliers and marble bathrooms. A budget-chic sanctuary with the occasional luxurious touch, entry-level rooms are built around the hotel’s signature circular windows with queen size beds opposite built-in walnut desks and Pucci-inspired seating arrangements. Added perks like luxury linens, room service and high-end bath products make stays longer than a few nights bearable for local business-types. A penthouse suite adds extra amenities like an outdoor terrace with shower, small kitchenette and hardwood floors covered with oriental rugs. All rooms are air conditioned and wired to the stern with modern technology and groovy collection of guests that make the hotel feel more like an upscale college co-op.
