Alas hotel redemption comes via the Scandinavian hospitality company C/O Hotels that acquired East Hampton's Maidstone Arms a few years back. Walking distance to the village, The Maidstone gets a modern Gustavian makeover with a mix-and-mash of Scandinavian furnishings and Americana architecture inherent to the historic inn. Located at the entrance of East Hampton village, a Colonial face of white wood siding with green shutters adorned with blossoming flower boxes is picture perfect in a sea of almost-neon green grass and mature shade trees. Inside, the hotel has been reimagined in a colorful Sweden-meets-Long Island design of floral-print wallpapers, ashy hardwood floors and eclectic woodwork. A small boutique sells environmentally friendly brands such as apothecary items by Malin+Goez and organic cotton linens by Coyuchi. On-site Living Room restaurant is a dressy design of colorfully bold-print upholstered chairs and creamy tabletops alit in candlelight offering a new American menu with a Scandinavian twist.
The Room
More inn than hotel, a stylish collection of renovated interior rooms feature flat-panel TVs, WiFi and micro-mini bar with healthy snacks, teas and French press coffee. The floral and wood motif of the main lobby extends into bedrooms with small seating areas and comfort-mined beds drawn with organic cotton sheets. Compact but modern bathrooms offer organic cotton bathrobes, towels and linens by Coyuchi and toiletries by Malin+Goetz. Included in the renovation were two freestanding guest cottages each with private entrances and oversize living areas outfitted in original artwork and antiques. All guests rooms come with a coveted local beach pass as well as imported bicycles to get there in style.
