It's the first new hotel to open on Capri in years, but in actuality the building has been around for almost 125-years as various incarnations of Continental and Platinum Resort Hotels. Located on a rocky perch above the main harbor, the glowing-white structure reaches over the Bay of Naples with delicate terraces with rod-iron fences and stone statuary. The intimate lobby area is the most stylish on Capri, with colorfully bold walls with glossy wainscoting interrupted by a seagrass-lined staircase with oil paintings and vintage photographs. Furnishings are refreshingly modern with white-upholstered Chippendale chairs, asymmetrical stools and low-slung loungers with nail-head detailing.

Fundamental design details like floors and ceilings are also decided modern with ebony hardwoods, chrome sconces and polished-metal ceiling fans. The in-house restaurant, serving an all-day Mediterranean menu, offers more of a classic English vibe with quaint Lounge Bar and stunning outdoor patio. While occupying a difficult hillside location, the modest pool and larger teak-lounge area connect to a well-equipped fitness area and the island's ESPA. Unfortunately the hotel is a good walk away from the main village and the cliffhanger roads make taxis or private transportation essential.

The Room

It’s not the only 19th Century villa hanging perilously off the Capri hillside, but it’s without doubt the sexiest. The hotel includes 22 guest rooms, 4 of which were blasted directly into the hillside, designed by acclaimed interior architect Michele Bonan. Duplicating the success of the JK Place in Florence, the hotel spins classic English design with modern Italian styling to create a comfortably stylish retreat on one of the most magical cliffs in Capri. Standard guest rooms are a rare delight, featuring fabric-enclosed beds with headboards of checkered-upholstery. Flat-screen TVs hang above antique desks with glossy vases and polished chrome table lamps. Larger junior suites offer separate living areas with expansive sliding windows, printed club chairs and masonry fireplaces. Details like handmade pillows with black-piping, rococo tables and handmade throw rugs are found throughout all room categories, as well as marble baths with deep-soaking tubs and rain showers. Two penthouse suites include larger terraces and private butlers, but wiser travelers would be better to book the private villa located next to the property perfect for long summer rentals and extravagant entertaining.
