Summer is over, but the arrival of Fall brings with it an ambitious
line-up of hotel openings from the Maldives to Miami. We'll start in our
hometown of Los Angeles where years of anticipation led to the hasty
summer unveiling of The Jeremy,
a 10-year hotel development that imploded just prior to opening
following its acquisition by Starwood Capital Group that in the last
minute scrapped the planned The James Hotel and its Michael
Schwartz-eatery to make room for chicer 1 Hotels West Hollywood -
opening sometime next year. Let's hope a better fate awaits Nomad Hotel Downtown LA LA with its eatery by chef Daniel Humm as well as nearby Soho Warehouse - Soho House's lofty work-play-eat clubhouse set to arrive later this year.
In Palm Springs, a questionable tax-payer subsidized revitalization of its downtown will culminate with the opening of Rowan
by Kimpton Hotels, a mid-range boutique hotel with rooftop pool that
connects the city's art museum and new retail zone that will also
include a forthcoming Andaz
by Hyatt. It's not as much about new real estate developments in Las
Vegas as it is reinvention as big casino operators concentrate on
revamping existing properties. The ambitious new Park MGM
is the resurrection of the 21-year old Monte Carlo Casino that will
include its own Nomad Hotel Las Vegas, outpost of Mario Batali and Joe
Bastianich's Eataly and installments of Chicago's Bavette's Steakhouse
and Primose by Michelin starred chef Bryce Shuman.
Still a ways away, Restoration Hardware will foray as hotelier
with a 14-room NYC property at 55 Gansevoort Street in the Meatpacking
District with rooftop decks and pool by Anderson Architects. Not the
only retailer to enter the hotel business, Japanese home store Muji will
debut a 79 room property in Tokyo’s Ginza outfitted with Muji furniture
and accessories. You can also look for West Elm Hotels to debut early
next year, a series of design properties set to open in burgeoning boho
destinations like Detroit, Portland and Maine. Further afield, Los Cabos
continues its resort expansion with the latest installment of
Ritz-Carlton Reserves and its Zadún
at Los Cabos. The dramatic 5-star luxury property with two golf courses
and desert botanical garden joins upcoming debuts by Montage, Park
Hyatt, Nobu Los Cabos and Four Seasons - let's just hope the security
situation stabilizes.
