Housed in a recently updated (probably should have been torn-down) Tudor-style motel in muddy gray colors and windows of protruding air conditioners, Sole East is the second hipster refuge to locate itself in the eastern edge of Long Island. Once a community for bohemian millionaires and toothless fisherman, Montauk is suddenly the chicest Hampton complete with its second surf-theme motel-cum-resort. The lobby is outfitted in Malibu-style surf memorabilia from the '50s and '60s with rattan club chairs and white-panel walls that beautifully frame a schmancy and grassy pool. The outdoor area is the heart of Sole East, spanning almost 3 acres outfitted in Balinese daybeds with oversize sofas and DJ booth spinning eclectic rock anthems and pop tunes. Sporty amenities include a Beachcruiser valet, volleyball court with countless shirtless surfers and organized events that offer a Montauk-version of Dirty Dancing summer soirees.
The Room
They’re the best rooms in Montauk, which really doesn’t say a lot if you’ve ever stayed at the Surf Lodge or other area motels. The difference is immediately felt at the reception, which handles only hotel guests and offers an all-day receptionist that assists with explaining to newbies the difference between East and Southampton. A total of 60 rooms and 7 suites are arranged along interior hallways accented in moody lighting and all-white zen theme. Rooms are minimalist monochromatic spaces with concrete or slate-tile floors outfitted in platform beds and black-and-white photography. Bathrooms feel a bit dated albeit with fresh coat of paint and decent selection of towels and toiletries. Interior guest rooms face the outdoor pool area that stays packed till 3am on weekend night, but with moaning air conditioners that is a necessity to mute the screaming starlets and himbo catcalls.
