A glassy storefront leads to a walk-in lounge under period rafter ceiling marked by exposed red brick walls and bar that exudes a retro vibe juxtaposed in sculptural chandelier and arty details. Walking through the eatery, the eyes are equally drawn to the arrangement of modern and local art on walls as well as the picture-crowd that looks like it was cast by a local talent scout. A comfy tufted banquette surround the main wall with exposed, modern tabletops opposing more vintage wooden doors and dramatic wood-pane windows.
The Food
Chef Nico Schuermans followed a short-stint at NY’s Gitane before headlining this Gastown Belgian eatery that he operates with his wife Karri. A choice of ala carte of two prix fixe menus begin with dishes like ahi tuna ceviche with coconut reduction, beef strip loin with Austrian chorizo or foie gras terrine with port reduction. Main includes moule frites, rib eye with truffle aioli and roasted duck breast with goat cheese tarragon gnocchi.
Last Word
Even before you first bite you will fall in love with this Gastown eatery scene led by a husband-and-wife duo that oozes a new era style that will hopefully infect the rest of the Vancouver dining.
