nightlife

The second bar located on the rooftop of Standard NYC, Le Bain was created with the help of 38-year old French Graffiti artist turned nightclub proprietor André Saraiva of Paris's Le Baron nightclub. Easier to get into than the Boom Boom that has another guarded curtain to ensure its VIP pedigree and only allows hotel guests till 10pm, Le Bain features a minimalist all-black bar of frothy society it-girls and indie artists that chitchat over the graffiti art installation in the stairwell that leads to the rooftop with rumpus room collection of waterbeds and mini-hot tubs.

Back downstairs, a small pool reminiscent of a '70s cruise ship pool is more for splashing than plunging due to it' small size and sticker disclaimers of 4-feet Deep and No Diving stickers. A nearby vending machine sells limited edition Standard bikini and boardshorts by Quiksilver in lengths of short and not so short for those a bit too modest for the 3am exhibitionism.

Tips

Don’t expect to find it on the Standard Hotel website or even on its Facebook page, accessed through a freight elevator ride to the top of the hotel once you fight your way through the club’s Darwinian street-level velvet rope.

Last Word

Even if you spent the last years on the moon, you’re likely aware of the cult-like status of Andre Balazs’s Standard Hotel with its legendary Boom Boom Room that’s hosted everyone from Gwyneth Paltrow to Madonna in the last year. Now the Boom has a sister club and with it a younger crowd and looser door policy, at least till 10pm.
